Frequently Asked Questions

What is WebKey? WebKey is Siemens PLM Software's new user authentication system. It is intended to take the confusion out of the myriad usernames and passwords that you had to deal with before. Instead of needing two or three account information, you'll only need one.
Why is it that sometimes I'm asked to login and other times I don't? WebKey Web servers utilize "session cookies" to keep track of your login. Once you've logged in your session cookie is set and you will not have to re-login. However if you quit your browser the cookie is automatically destroyed and you will have to re-login.
How do I get a WebKey account? WebKey accounts are available to all Siemens PLM Software customers with an active maintenance contract. To get a WebKey account just click here and start filling in the information.
What else uses Webkey? Currently, WebKey is being used by the FTP server, LogIR, QTAC, UGAnswer, BBSNotes, and Usenet among others.
I'm entering the correct login information, but I still can't login. Why? WebKey Web servers use "cookies" to keep track of who has logged in. If your Web browser is configured to reject all cookies, you will not be able to login. If your browser is accepting cookies and you are still having problems logging in, feel free to contact GTAC for more assistance.
I'm trying to subscribe to a newsgroup and get an error "News host group: 500 Parameters missing for to"; what's wrong? To subscribe to a newsgroup, you MUST have your Reply-to E-Mail address entered in your personal subscription "Configure My Settings".
What are cookies? Should I be concerned? Although some people are afraid of cookies, there's really nothing to be worried about. The WebKey Web servers only use cookies to keep track of who has logged in, and nothing else. Also, the cookies that Siemens PLM Software uses are "session cookies". This means that when you logout of WebKey or close your Web browser, the cookie is automatically deleted from your system.
Cookies are enabled but I still can't login. Why? Be sure that you are accessing the full hostname of the FTP server. Siemens PLM Software uses domain cookies which require that you MUST be pointing to http://ftp.ugs.com/ to properly login. You will not be able to login if you are accessing it without a domain name, or with the ugs.com domain name.
Why does my Location/Address line give out my username and password? This only happens to people who are using the FTP protocol and not the HTTP protocol. Typically when accessing the FTP server via the FTP protocol with a Web browser, the URL specified looks like:

ftp://username:password@ftp.ugs.com

There is no way around the problem, this syntax is part of the URL specification. The URL specification is available here and the FTP syntax is specified in section 3. If you want to use the FTP protocol, your username and password will appear. If you do not want this information to be shown you should access the FTP server with the HTTP protocol by going here.

People who use FTP clients will not encounter this issue.
